Ecuador’s Election 2017

Preliminary results of the Ecuadorian Election have Lenín Moreno with 39.1% of votes, just short of the 40% needed to win.  Guillermo Lasso is in second place with 28% of the vote. Once all the votes have been counted, if no candidate has reached 40% of the vote then there will be a runoff election on April 2.

Here is a quick summary of the election frontrunners:

Lenín Moreno (PAIS Alliance Party), former Vice President of Rafael Correa, the current president. Moreno is backed by Correa and has created a platform based on improving health, education, jobs, social security, and developing Ecuador as an eco-conscious tourism destination. Guillermo Lasso (Creating Opportunities Party) is Moreno’s closest competitor and his platform has been based eliminating taxes. Cynthia Viteri (Social Christian Party), a conservative, is focusing on stimulating the economy and putting democratic institutions back into place. The final candidate Paco Moncayo’s (National Agreement for Change Party) platform addresses social programs and promises, “no more taxes.”

We hope the new leadership will welcome Ecuadent into their borders.

September Dental Mission to Mompiche 2016

September 2016

From September 15-24, 2016, the Ecuadent Foundation and the Platinum Circle Dental Team traveled to Mompiche, in the province of Esmeraldas, one of the poorest provinces in Ecuador, for our 26th year of mission work. Over four and a half days our team treated a total of 849 children, 607 of which received dental treatment and 242 of which received pediatric care. A total of 3435  dental procedures were performed! Most of the children we treated were  displaced survivors of the April 2016 earthquakes. Ecuadent Foundation again expresses our deepest gratitude to Platinum Fortune Foundation for partnering with us to support the September 2016 Dental Mission.

Thank You for Your Help in 2016

Ecuadent would like to thank the many donors and volunteers that made 2016 a successful year of service to the children of Ecuador.Three overseas missions, earthquake relief efforts as well as other outreach  to the disadvantaged children of Ecuador has kept the Ecuadent Foundation busy and active, as we now enter our 27th year of outreach to the “niños y niñas,” the boys and girls, of Ecuador. Thanks to you, thousands of procedures and hundreds of children received care. There is still so much more to be done and we are already planning ahead to when we can next return to with our teams doctors, dentists and support staff.

Medical & Dental Mission to Puyo, February 2015

Medical Mission February 19, 2015 – March 1, 2015

Over four surgical days our team treated a total of 53 patients. We corrected a number of congenital differences, including 6 cleft palates, 3 cleft lips, 4 polydactyl/syndactyl, and 4 vascular malformations. We also performed 9 nasal surgeries, 14 excisions of tumors or keloids, 5 reconstructions, and 8 burn scar revisions.

Dental Mission, February 26, 2015- March 7, 2015

Over five treatment days our dental volunteers were able to treat 556 children with 2,823 procedures which included 425 cleanings, 459 fluoride treatments, 1,127 sealants, 567 restorations, 211 extractions, and 34 other dental procedures.

Our volunteer pediatric orthodontist successfully created 6 appliances for children, three of whom suffered from inoperable cleft palate who can now eat and talk with an artificial palate appliance.

Medical Teaching Mission, February 26, 2015 – March 7, 2015

Three American radiologists provided lectures and practical training on topics in ultrasound, echography, and imaging to the local hospital staff. Our nursing professional instructed nurses on safe medication administration, infection prevention, leadership within nursing, and patient care. By teaching specialties to the hospital staff, our volunteers strived to empower local health professionals to serve their own people long after we return home.

October 2014 Platinum Circle Dental Mission to Salinas

Members of the Platinum Circle Fortune Management Group volunteered for the Ecuadent Foundation from October 16 to October 25, 2014 to treat impoverished children living in the areas surrounding Salinas, in the province of Santa Elena, Ecuador.

Our team treated 466 children over four and a half treatment days. We performed 3,650 procedures, a number that reflects the efficient and hard work of every member on the team.

The specifics of the procedures are as follows:

  • 432 cleanings
  • 422 fluoride treatments
  • 1,721 sealants
  • 945 restorations
  • 124 extractions
  • 4 root canals
  • 2 pulp caps.

Pediatrician Dr. Karasik  treated 155 patients, helping families with medications, medical advice, and nutritional guidance.

Notably, we traveled to a nearby neighborhood where many of the children lived called Paraiso, which ironically translates to “Paradise.” On our journey we saw miles of dirt roads, hand-made thatched shacks, and children walking barefooted in the streets. It was heart-wrenching to see how these children lived. We passed out toothbrushes to a school of kindergarteners, giving each child enough toothpaste and toothbrushes for their entire household. We witnessed the joy that this simple act brought to the children; we saw six-year-old girls hug and kiss their toothbrushes in pure excitement. — This is the reason we return year after year: to change the lives of the children who need it most.

Thank you so much to our volunteers, and to those at home who contributed to the success of our mission through their generous support!
